Following on from a less-than-satisfying career as a door-to-door pots and pans salesman, used car salesman, nightclub barman and shopfitter's assistant, Simon Dale began his radio career by moving to the Australian island state of Tasmania, where it was legal to work for free. After several days of being told "No, thank you, we don't need anyone to sweep the carpark", the boss of TTT FM, Hobart's number one radio station, handed Simon a broom. Three months of unpaid labour later, and there was a place in the Promotions department. Another three months and it was Promotions Manager.
From the Southernmost tip of Australia, Simon was called 3,000 kilometres to the far Northern edge of the continent, to run Promotions for HOT 100 FM in Darwin, and during two years in that position, won three national radio awards (RAWARDS). Throughout these years, though, his focus was always on that microphone, and when the opportunity arose to take over as presenter of HOT 100's evening show, Simon jumped at it.
Strong ratings led him to a job on K-Rock in Geelong, in the South of Melbourne, but after three years the travel bug bit, and Simon packed up, took £2,000 and a cassette of his K-Rock show, and headed for the UK.
Upon landing, he took over evenings on Trent FM in Nottingham. Another three years on, and it was off to the largest radio station in the UK outside London - Galaxy 105 in Leeds. Then, three bosses of KISS 100 in London came to visit, and over dinner, offered Simon a place on one of the biggest radio brands in the world.
All this has led to dreams coming true, as Simon now presents Drivetime on KISS100, as well as the networked Saturday chart show. Since being in London, Simon has been playing at some of the Capital's coolest clubs and nights including Miami Calling, Funky Buddha and Pop, as well as the Leeds Love Parade and at Northern Light outside of the Capital in addition to venues across Europe.
Once again, in terms of radio, independent surveys show that this has been a highly successful move for Simon. Who knows what will be next...?
